Becton Dickinson Sharps Safety Program

Helped develop the BD Sharps Safety initiative in response to concerns of accidental needle sticks and other sharps injuries.  Created understanding for issues associated with sharps safety and need for education, training, benchmarking, best practices, products that encourage safe practices, and support for guidelines, recommendations, and legislation.

 

Johnson & Johnson Quality Institute

Worked with Johnson & Johnson and Roderick McNealy in developing the communications for the J&J Quality Institute for the education, information, and training of associates for quality as well as the tools for managing and measuring and continuous improvement. The book, Making Quality Happen (Chapman and Hall, New York, NY; 1993) is an outcome of the program in practical application. While working on this initiative, Smith also developed the communication component; a culture of quality can only be achieved through quality, effective communication.  

 

Pediatric Healthcare Safety Program

Helped research, develop, design, and write the BD Pediatric Healthcare Safety Program; assembled and worked with a board of pediatricians; conducted research over 3 ½ years for focus groups, surveys, and interviews with pediatricians, nurses, and caregivers in U.S. provider organizations and private practices; published manual for managing the pain and anxiety associated with pediatric care.

 

B. Braun Excellence in Safety Worldwide Initiative

Worked with B. Braun in creating their worldwide initiative for patient, healthcare worker, and environment safety. The program addresses issues of healthcare safety including medication errors, hospital-acquired infections, sharps safety, hazardous waste, and more.  Smith developed the strategy, plan, marketing, and communications, designed, launched, and implemented the program.

 

ALA Asthma Outreach  

Created, wrote, and designed the American Lung Association Asthma Outreach  Marketing Asthma Education and Communication Programs (6 Volumes) with Schering Corporation and the American Lung Association.  Smith developed the program based on intensive research with the Opinion Research Corporation and funded with grants from Schering.

 

C. R. Bard Corporate Identity

Created, designed, wrote, and launched the C. R. Bard Worldwide Corporate and Brand Identity Programs, the Bard Corporate Alliance Program, the Bard HR Program, and the Bard divisions and associate brand identity programs for Bard Medical, Impra, Bard Electrophysiology, Bard Peripheral Vascular, Davol, and others.

 

Minimally Invasive Surgery
Worked with J&J Ethicon and Ethicon Endo in creating their worldwide initiative for initiating and promoting minimally invasive surgery in U.S. markets. The program provided healthcare professionals with a comprehensive program for introducing and performing minimally invasive surgery in provider organizations and surgical centers with education, training, and certification programs including new surgical techniques and instrumentation.

 

Hoffmann External Fixation Systems
Worked with Howmedica Orthopaedics, Pfizer, American Academy of Orthopaedics, and Hoffmann Switzerland introducing the first external fixation system for managing soft-tissue and bone trauma in the world. Smith created, planned, and designed the education and training programs for surgeons and trauma centers using a color-coded device and instrumentation system for creating optimal surgical outcomes.

 

Johnson & Johnson Corporate Identity Standards

Created, wrote, designed, and launched the Johnson & Johnson Worldwide Corporate Identity Policies and Standards for logo and color applications and trademark guidelines (with CEOs James E. Burke and David R. Clare).  Smith later developed the  J&J division, product packaging, and brand identity standards for Sister Companies (with CEO Ralph Larsen) for key J&J products and services.

 

Orthopaedic Nursing Manual

Wrote, designed, published, and marketed the Orthopaedic Patient Care Manual for Nursing Practices (3 Volumes) for reconstructive surgery, trauma management, pre-, intra-, and post-op interventions, and patient management.

 

Diabetes Patient Compliance Initiative

Created and designed the Optimal Patient Care Patient Compliance Program for Type 2 Diabetes for therapeutic and preventative compliance for advancing patient health, healing, and wellbeing with their healthcare providers, insurers, and payors.

The Pharaoh's Photographer

Designed, wrote, and developed a museum exhibit dedicated to the Harry Burton, his photography , and his innovative techniques for documenting and recording the  discovery and exploration of the King Tutankhamun burial chambers in the Valley of the Kings, Egypt.  The exhibit highlighted 10 historic photographs that exemplified Burton's sensitivity and talent as the father of archaeological photography. 

The Spectrum of Communication 

Researched, wrote, and designed the book, The Spectrum of Communication, which is an academic and philosophic overview of expression and exchange and the value words and language offer in life.

Family Promise of Warren County Hospitality Network

Developed a corporation devoted to helping low income families and communities deal with the challenges they face for housing, poverty, education, health care, community, and well being.  The first program is the Interfaith Hospitality Network (see below). Other programs in development include transitional housing program, affordable housing development, aging out youth, homeless women. Family Promise works with Warren County Human Services, welfare, and other county government and agency programs.

 

Warren County Interfaith Hospitality Network

Developed the Warren County Interfaith Hospitality Network for families and children who recently have lost their homes. The network is comprised of more than 31 faith-based congregations that provide volunteer services, shelter, food, and clothing. The network has a Family Resource Center for Warren County, NJ; it is a center of family education and support services as well as a resource for case management and access to essential services needed by homeless families. 

 

March of Dimes Chairman

Worked with March of Dimes to develop Campaign in New Jersey, developed communications and seminars, held events, and chaired two years of walks. 

 

Caring for Kids Conferences: Co-Creator and Chairman

Developed the Caring for Kids Programs in New Jersey for Parents of children with special needs, for doctors and clinicians, for children’s hospital professionals, and home care organizations. Hosted the program of education, seminars, continuing education, and tradeshow seminar. Developed the program to include children in attendance with activities for the kids and sessions for healthcare professionals and service providers.
